We make suggestions when giving advice to others on what they might do in a certain situation. There are a number of formulas used when making suggestions in English. Here are some of the most common that can be used in both formal and informal contexts:

Using phrases which ask for rejection or acceptance of the suggestion

·  ‘What about’ + ‘-ing’

What about asking Norman for help?

·  ‘How about’ (if) + verb – used to introduce a hypothetical idea.

How about (if) we leave this until tomorrow?

·  ‘What if … ’

What if we wait until they make an offer? 

·  ‘What do you think of this idea’ – Can be used in the same way and when followed by a description of the idea it usually implies rejection or acceptance of the suggestion.

What do you think of this idea: an open plan office with glass walls?
