In any given situation you may want to confirm whether what you think about something is correct, or whether or not you have understood what you have just heard. When specific information is sought, the simplest way to get an answer from your interlocutor(s) is by asking for confirmation or denial. Asking for confirmation or denial is essentially asking for a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer and there are a number of different ways to do this.

Asking for confirmation or denial with shortened questions

In spoken English in informal contexts, you might hear a shortened question which leaves out the verb. This type of question relies on intonation and is formed in two different ways.

·  By omitting the auxiliary verb

These questions are asked by dropping the auxiliary verb and using a rising intonation.

(Do you) – You want to talk about it? 

(Are) – You interested?
