In verbal communication, there are often situations where the speaker’s meaning is not fully understood by the listener. In these cases, the listener may wish to ask for clarifications on the content or meaning of what the speaker is saying. Understanding is vital to effective communication, therefore it is important to be aware of the various ways of asking for clarifications.

If you wish to have a specific point clarified you may wish to use one of the following 

·  ‘What exactly …?’ 

To ask for more precise information about something
